Mount Pleasant Real Estate
Just an arm stretch away from downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant is a suburban utopia surrounded on three sides by rivers, waterways, tidal creeks, and harbor estuaries.Named an “All American City” by the National Civic League in 2010, Mount Pleasant is continuously growing with nearly 70,000 residents, nationally-ranked schools, competitive sports leagues, rare restaurants, and -- of course -- a history intrinsically sewn to Charleston’s colonial birth.
Similar to Charleston’s genial relationship and economic reciprocity with the Kiawah Indians, the first European settlers (1680) established relationships with the Wando and Seewee (Sewel) Indians, who occupied the East Cooper region in the early 1700s. Sadly, diseases such as Smallpox, Influenza and the Bubonic Plague killed most of the coastal Native Americans. As a homage to their land and heritage, many streets, businesses, neighborhoods, and schools reflect the Native Americans’ presence. Through grounded institutions like Wando High School, established neighborhoods like Wakendaw Lakes, and scenic waterways like Shem (Shemee) Creek, the culture and sacrifice of the Wando and Seewee Indians will not be forgotten.
