The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach recently loaned two paintings by renowned Impressionists Paul Gauguin and Claude Monet. While we’ll be sad to see those master works leave Palm Beach, the Norton received two even more exciting paintings in exchange for the Gauguin and Monet.

The most famous of the two new paintings at the Norton is Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Poplars at Saint-Remy.” Van Gogh painted this canvas around the same time he produced his iconic painting “The Starry Night.” These works were created during perhaps the most important and productive part of his painting career.

The other painting currently visiting the Norton is Edgar Degas’ enormous “Portrait of Mlle. Hortense Valpincon.” This delicately render portrait of Degas’ friend’s young daughter is accompanied by a bronze sculpture of a dancer and a charcoal drawing by the same artist.

The Norton’s newest acquisitions show that it is a world-class museum dedicated to bringing the best the art world has to offer to West Palm Beach. Palm Beachers have until April 17 to see the Van Gogh, and anyone who has a chance really should swing by. The painting is that spectacular.
