It's an exciting time of growth and opportunity in the Charleston area. Since 2009, two new vehicle assembly plants have been announced in Charleston. These expansions are only the most recent examples of growth in the region, with the metro area ranking in the top twenty in the nation for advanced industries according to the Brookings Institution. What makes Charleston such an appealing place to set up shop? Swedish-based Volvo Cars chose Charleston for its first North American factory, and it's expected to create 4000 jobs in the next several years. The region was chosen for "its logistics, its labor, its infrastructure, everything," says Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson. There are over 250 automakers and suppliers in South Carolina, with over 100 in the Charleston region alone. Volvo isn't only the company coming to the area, either; Germany's Daimler has announced plans to build a $500 million expansion to its Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans plant in Charleston County.
