gb-color-31-sc In the tradition of Western music, does any one figure loom larger than Johann Sebastian Bach? Despite Charleston's long history of connections to the Old World, Bach has received at best intermittent attention in the city. That's all about to change thanks to the Bach Society of Charleston. The Bach Society is a newly formed nonprofit that just performed its first concert last night, September 13. The group is spearheaded by Ricard Bordas, an accomplished countertenor and current professor of music at Charleston Southern University. What began as an annual Bach Festival at the First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston is now morphing into the Bach Society under his guidance. Their mission is to provide authentic performances of Baroque music for the Charleston area, complete with period instruments. This means that the music will be presented in a closer approximation of what it really sounded like in the 17th and 18th centuries. The new Baroque Society of Charleston is a welcome addition to the thriving Charleston arts scene. Learn more about them below!
